The buzzing from the microphone buster Stone gave me was like a gnat in my ear. I ignored it. “If I use the perfume spritzer to become invisible, I can go through here,” I pointed at the map spread across the table, “and take these stairs to get up to the highest level.”

It was after dinner and I’d claimed to be tired. Bracken had wanted to stay and socialize with his friends. Or maybe he was seeing his girlfriend. I didn’t care. I had more important things to do.

Watu sat in a chair at the table. Her serious expression showed her thoughtful concentration. “Idea good. Because of guards, elevator avoid.”

Between the microphone buster and the fake vid of me taking a nap on the couch, we could talk freely in the living room area of the suite. The palace guards must think I slept a lot.

“Based on my dream last night, Rye should be somewhere around here.” I stabbed at the spot with my finger, remembering Henrik punching him in the jaw. “I’ll have to use these two elevators. I don’t have a choice. I’ll go in, search the top tower room, and find Rye.”

She stroked her chin. “Rooms how will you get in?”

Most of the closed rooms had retina scanners to unlock the doors and I couldn’t climb the outside wall of the tower.

“I can’t use magic to go through the door sensors.” I’d tested it out after Bracken had dragged me out of the meeting room this morning and he’d gone back inside. While waiting for my cyborg escort, I’d spritzed myself and tried using magic to unlock the meeting room door. It hadn’t worked. When the cyborg had arrived, it used its eye lens to deliver a lunch tray to the meeting room before escorting me to my suite. It used the eye scan to unlock my door too.

“Climb on outside towers you can’t.” Watu had done several reconnaissance missions, playing the innocent lost servant or chaperone to gather intel. “All day, all night, spotlights shine on crystal towers. Guards watch.”

I remembered the spotlights from when I’d lived in Lindenhamn and how they highlighted the palace and the advances in human tech. She was right. I couldn’t climb up the crystal spire.

The door clicked open. I grabbed the map and tucked it behind my back. My muscles tightened.

A cyborg servant rolled in. “I’m sorry, Princess Ellery. There’s something wrong with the acoustics in this room.”

“Acoustics?” Ah, the cyborg meant the surveillance microphones. The security team must’ve realized the microphones weren’t working.

“I would hate for the buzzing to hurt your sensitive ears.”

Reaching up, I smoothed my slightly pointed, and now heated, ears. I was sensitive about their shape, especially when I remembered the regent asking about cutting ears off. An idea formed in my head and I followed the robot to the butler pantry.

“Before you fix the acoustics, would you mind helping me with a project?” I scanned the room, trying to find something for the cyborg to do.
